Hi there
My name is Emery Newton. I am an Apprentice with Ballet Theatre of Maryland, where I also teach in the conservatory. I hold a BA in Dance with a minor in Music from Dickinson College and completed Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet’s Certificate Program in 2024. Read more about me and my story below!
My Story
I started dancing when I was three years old, though I did not become serious about ballet until I was fourteen. Alongside dance, I have always been creative. My first business started when I was 7 and I sold drawings of flowers at family gatherings and a little later, I made duct tape wallets and called it a business. In highschool I started a business called Effervescent where I made non-toxic medicinal bath bombs. I completed in the Kansas State Entrepreneurship compition and although I didn't place I won my region and made some cash. So making things has always felt natural to me.
Sylvan began during a quiet and uncertain time. I had just graduated high school and moved to a new state in the middle of the pandemic. My first semester of college was virtual, and suddenly there was an abundance of time. In that stillness, I returned to making with my hands. Sewing became a way to stay grounded, to create something tangible, and to move slowly when everything else felt ungrounded.
As I returned to in person college and began balancing my degree alongside intensive ballet training, Sylvan had to take a step back. Even then, I never stopped creating. I worked on the costume team for dance and theatre, altered prom dresses through a local thrift shop, and continued finding ways to sew whenever I could. I was also choreographing, making work for Dickinson Dance, and constantly dreaming up new projects. Creativity has always followed me, even when time was limited.
Making things slowly means fully inhabiting the process. It means enjoying each step, being present, and allowing time and care to shape the final piece. The longer you spend with something, the more meaning it carries when it is finished. Time and care are things that cannot be manufactured, and that belief sits at the heart of my work.
Sylvan is where all of these threads of things I love come together. Dance, sewing, patience, and a lifelong love of making things by hand.
