Hi there!

My name is Emery Newton. I am an Apprentice with Ballet Theatre of Maryland, where I also teach at their conservatory. I hold a BA in Dance with a minor in Music from Dickinson College and completed Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet’s Certificate Program in 2024. Read more about me and my story below!

My Story

I started dancing at three years old, though I did not become serious about ballet until I was fourteen. Alongside dance, I have always been drawn to creating. My first “business” began at seven, selling drawings of flowers at family gatherings. Not long after, I was making duct tape wallets and calling that a business too.

In high school, I took an entrepreneurship class where I first learned the process of building something from the ground up and fell in love with it. During that time, I founded Effervescent, a business where I sold non-toxic, medicinal bath bombs. I went on to compete in the NetWork Kansas Project Open Youth Entrepreneurship State Competition, where I won my region and the People’s Choice Award in 2017, earning my first real profit. Making things has always felt natural to me.

Sylvan began during a quiet and uncertain time. I had just graduated high school and moved to a new state in the middle of the pandemic. My first semester of college was entirely virtual, and suddenly there was an abundance of time. In that stillness, I returned to working with my hands. Sewing became a way to stay grounded, to create something tangible, and to move slowly when everything else felt unsettled.

As I returned to in-person college and began balancing my degree with intensive ballet training, Sylvan had to take a step back. Even then, I never stopped creating. I worked on the Dickinson Theatre and Dance Costume Team, altered prom dresses through a local thrift shop, and continued sewing whenever I could. I was also choreographing and creating work for Dickinson Dance, constantly imagining new projects. Creativity has always followed me, even when time was limited.

Making things slowly means fully inhabiting the process. It means being present, moving with care, and allowing time to shape the final piece. The longer you spend with something, the more meaning it holds when it is finished. Time and care cannot be manufactured. That belief sits at the heart of my work.

Sylvan is where all of these threads come together: dance, sewing, patience, and a lifelong love of making things by hand.
